At first, you may think that organic lawn care is difficult to achieve. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Maintaining a natural lawn is easy and simple. If you are new to gardening you may feel overwhelmed at the prospect of keeping a beautiful lush green yard, however once you understand the basic needs and requirements of your lawn, keeping its appearance isn’t difficult. It does require a commitment and regular and continual maintenance. But it doesn’t need to involve harsh and toxic chemicals, an extraordinary amount of money, or a substantial amount of your time.

Some of the basic needs for every lawn include maintaining the proper PH balance of your soil, preventing pests and disease from ravaging your lawn, and reduce the amount of weeds that want to take over and ruin your lawn’s root system. Other factors that are detrimental yet unavoidable to the health of your lawn include drought, floods, storms, and wind damage. Pets also pose a serious threat to the health of your lawn and should be taken into consideration when devising your strategy for organic lawn care.

Testing your soil and treating it for either too much or too little acidity is the first step to maintaining organic lawn care. Too many times, people neglect the underlying root of the problem, which begins with the soil, and they try to solve their lawn problems by applying surface chemicals. Have your soil tested by a professional company, or purchase a soil kit and test it yourself. The results of your soil test are key to ensuring that the strategies that you implement for an organic lawn will be successful.

After treating and preparing the soil, the next step in your strategy involves choosing the best type of grass for your area. Many times, people move from climate to climate and are accustomed to certain plants or grasses from other regions. Then they plant these species in areas that aren’t designed by nature to host these plants. This can cause numerous problems. If you have recently purchased a home and are having trouble with the lawn, find out what type of grass it is. If you discover that the grass is not indigenous to the area, you may want to seriously consider removing the lawn and planting a new one. By planting grass that is local to your area, you are winning half of the battle of lawn maintenance in one step. Local grasses are more resilient towards disease, pests, and the problems that are associated with your local climate. If you are having difficulty determining the type of grass you have, take a sample of it to your local garden center. They will be able to identify it for you, as well as give you tips and advice for that particular species.

Once you have adjusted your soil levels and selected the best grass for your area, you will be presented with a number of various organic lawn care methods to maintain the health and appearance of your lawn in a natural and organic fashion.
