Chemicals might be the least of one's worries.

Bacteria live in the irrigation pipes, and when chlorine kills bacteria, the by-products are highly troublesome carcinogens. Furthermore, if water restrictions (due to drought) prevent the purging of said lines twice, or thrice, weekly, then the bacterial bloom skyrockets to "maltish" proportions.

... and if that weren't enough ...

Well moistened soils tend to harbor worms and nematodes- both can, and have been, delivered into bathtubs through un-defended connections.

... and even THAT is not all ....

Not only do these backflow assemblies keep the water in the irrigation pipes or lines form backflowing into the public water system but when installed correctly the assembly will also protect the homeowners from drinking what is in the pipes also.
